Kenny Chesney – Omaha Concert

This summer a bunch of Team Cocktail fans will be making the trip to Kansas City for Kenny Chesney’s Going Coastal Tour.  Unfortunately a few of us are not going to be able to make it, so when we saw he was going to be in Omaha it was a no brainer that we needed to go.  So we loaded up the truck and drove the 5 hours to Omaha, trust us the drive was well worth it! While on our 5 hour drive we discovered that it was Kenny Chesney’s 43rd birthday as well. What better way to celebrate Kenny’s birthday than with him in Omaha?  We are thinking of making this a tradition!

Upon arrival we checked in to our room and decided it was time to tailgate.  Since it was snowing we had to do our “tailgating” inside, but that didn’t slow us down!  We put on our favorite Team Cocktail t-shirts, grabbed our slap koozies, and headed to Upstream Brewery in the Old Market district.  We highly suggest ordering the Upstream Sampler, which gives you a taste of all their microbrews.  After trying all of their beers we decided that the Decimator Doppelbock was the winner.  Not only was it smooth and great tasting, but it was also 9% ABV…bonus!  Other favorites were the Capitol Premium Pale Ale and the Sebastian Bock (seasonal lager).

After we finished our sampler we figured it was time to head to the Qwest Center for the concert.  This was our first time there, but we have to say the entry into the arena was quick and easy.  The first thing we did was run over to the ID station to get our wristbands, then we stood in line to grab a beer.

We then got down to the floor and took our seats and it wasn’t long before Uncle Kracker took the stage.  Prior to the concert I wasn’t sure how much I was going to like Uncle Kracker live and I must say that 2 minutes into his performance I was hooked.  He sounded great live and didn’t try to sing any of his obscure stuff.  Instead he knew his place, sang 6 of his most well known songs including a cover of Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long.”  As it was Kenny’s birthday he got the entire crowd to yell “Happy Birthday Kenny” in unison, which was very cool.

After a quick 5-10 minute break Billy Currington took the stage and got the crowd going again by opening with “That’s How Country Boys Roll.”  Billy Currington is one of those artists who when you see him in concert you will catch yourself saying, “I love this song.  I didn’t know he sang it.”  He played a set list of 12 songs and we knew every song, except for the one where we went to the concourse to grab some food.  After Billy Currington was done we had about a 20 minute set change prior to Kenny taking the stage.  We figured this was a perfect time to grab a beer.  A trick we learned was to go to the pizza stand as there was never a line and they had beer on tap, so instead of standing in line like everyone else, we were able to get our beers and get back to the concert in no time.

After we got back to our seats the lights went down and the anticipation for Kenny was at an all-time high.  With the crowd screaming and his back drop flickering as if a thunderstorm was going through, Kenny busted onto stage playing one of his new hits “Live a Little.”  From then on it was a non stop, 2+ hour, 24 song show from Kenny.  With a great mix of new and old hits he had us rocking from start to finish.  He also had Billy Currington come on stage and sing “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” with him, which was awesome.  To close out the concert he had a video montage going and played “The Boys of Fall.”  Although that isn’t one of my favorite Kenny Chesney songs, I do have to admit it was a pretty powerful ending to an awesome show!

It’s hard to believe that this was my first Kenny concert and I have to say I regret not going before, but I guess we all live and learn!  Not only does Kenny put on a great show, but everyone at the concert is there for the same reason…to have fun!  We even made friends with one of the ushers near us.  If you have a chance to see him on his Going Coastal Tour this year I highly recommend that you do.  It’ll give you the opportunity for 5 hours not to think about your job, the economy, or anything else stressful, instead you will be sucked into Kenny’s world, where the only thing that matters is getting into that coastal state of mind.
