The Mint Julep

With the first Saturday of May approaching that only means one thing…The Kentucky Derby! This is a time when people bust out their fancy, and sometimes ugly hats, put a little money on their favorite pony, and last, but certainly not least, enjoy a mint julep.

For most people this refreshing drink is busted out once a year, and that day happens to be tomorrow. When you think of drinks that go along with sporting events the Mint Julep and the Kentucky Derby may be the most recognizable.

      The always refreshing Mint Julep.

There are many different ways to make a mint julep, but to help get your derby party started I thought I would share our recipe.

Simple Syrup
Soda Water
Crushed Ice
Julep Cups (if available)

Prep Work
The night before make a batch of simple syrup.  This is very simple as you just add equal parts sugar & water and boil until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool and dump into a container (empty liquor bottles work great…as I’m sure you have a bunch of those laying around!) and place in the fridge.  Also this is a good time to place your julep cups in the freezer. Not necessary, but it’ll make your mint julep extra cold the next day. Do this and you will thank me!

  • In a shaker add mint leaves, 1-tsp sugar, and 2 oz simple syrup & muddle.
  • Add 2 oz of bourbon & muddle.
  • Add crushed ice and shake.
  • Pour into julep cup and top with soda water.
  • Enjoy!

So tonight when you get home be sure to make a batch of simple syrup and get those cups in the freezer because tomorrow is Derby Day!
